Christine Kwan

In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, this month we’re featuring Christine Kwan.

Christine started taking Pro-training with Brian years ago when he taught at PAC. She joined Undisputed about a year after it opened and has been with us ever since. Christine was diagnosed with breast cancer exactly two years ago. She had surgery almost immediately, and started chemo for two months after the surgery, followed by six weeks of radiation the following spring. Christine was unable to go to the gym for about two weeks post-surgery, but after that she was back at it. All through the chemo and radiation she didn’t miss a day of UBG. She also managed to continue hitting the slopes! Even her doctors were amazed by her stamina! She really credits her working out for giving her the energy to endure the recovery.

Christine says she has worked out for years, but “definitely not as much as I do now.” Pro-training made her realize “there was more to life than just the Stairmaster and weights!” She loves the “intensity” of our classes at Undisputed, and has also picked up Pilates and Yoga in the past few years.

Here’s my favorite quote from Christine: “I think being able to workout as usual during treatment made me feel like it wasn’t the end of the world, that I was still sort of in control, that I could still do normal things.” She’s now totally addicted to working out and doesn’t even think it’d be possible for her to work out less, “if not more!”

This feature is unique in that exercise is about so much more than just weight loss. Christine is a testament to that. Some view exercise as a chore, but for people like Christine, it was a good friend who helped her get through a tough time in her life. So the next time you see a woman who often sports a bandana beating the crap out of a bag at UBG, that would be our girl Christine! It is Undisputed Boxing Gym’s honor to be a part of someone’s battle, and victory, over cancer.
