TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS

We believe in a comprehensive approach to health, fitness and the fighting arts. As a complement to the modern fighting arts offered, such as MMA and Muay Thai Kickboxing, we have a program in the ancient art of Taekwondo.

Our TKD program is taught by an Undisputed Leader in their style, Golden State Martial Arts, and we are proud to have them as part of the UBG family.

Adult and Youth classes available.

Taekwondo/Karate

gstkd-logoTaekwondo is literally translated as the art or way of kicking and punching. It is a native Korean form of self defense that embraces kicking, punching, dodging, and parrying. It is a system for training both mind and body, with an emphasis on the development of moral character.

At UBG, students learn a well-rounded martial art that is much richer and more effective than the sport form usually associated with Taekwondo. In addition to kicking and hand techniques, students also learn sweeps, takedowns, and falling. Traditional forms are practiced and are essential to developing a strong foundation in the art.

U.S. History:

Golden State's roots in the U.S. go back to 1968 when Chris Jensen and Debbie Pedersen's instructor, Marty Mackowski, opened Mackowski's Taekwondo in Burlingame, California. His students were known for their superior fighting skills and excellence in martial arts competition.

When Mr. Mackowski retired in 1988, Mr. Jensen and Ms. Pedersen opened Golden State Taekwondo, carrying on the tradition of excellence and the open-minded approach to the martial arts begun 20 years earlier.

In 2007, Golden State moved its Dojo to Undisputed Boxing Gym.

Lineage History:

Golden State’s lineage can be traced back to Bodhidarmha the legendary founder of martial arts in the 6th century.

The Lineage is chronicled in an image in the slide show to the left. It is also displayed in the Studio at UBG.

Many great champions began their training at Mackowski's and Golden State. The excellent technical foundation given has always allowed our students to succeed in the competition style of their choice, such as Point Fighting, Kickboxing, Olympic Style TKD, and professional Boxing. Following is a list of those who particularly excelled in the competition arena.

  • John Bautista – Champion Point Fighter and Forms Competitor, 1980's
  • Marcia Hall – 1978 and 1979 TKD World Champion
  • Lydia Zele – 1989 TKD World Champion
  • Dana Hee –1988 Olympic Gold Medalist
  • Rometra Craig –1996 Junior World TKD Bronze Medalist
  • Brian Schwartz – ISKA Super Middleweight World Champion & 6-Time NBL World Champion
  • Venya Bruk & Dipankan Bhattacharya –2005 NBL World Champion Team Forms
